Jesus said: “The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many”. Mark 10:45
Our Maundy Thursday service and meal was a whole benefice venture this year, with Sandford as the hosting church, and the Bartons Churches Together providing the food - a Middle Eastern meal of lamb tagine followed by dates and figs, catered by the Cinnamon Stick in Middle Barton.
The service started with a hymn and prayers, followed by symbolic hand washing (in lieu of foot washing!), then the meal was served.
During the meal, there were intercessions, and after the second course we shared the Eucharist with each person present administering the bread and wine to their neighbour.
The service finished with stripping the altar, to symbolise the soldiers stripping Jesus before he was crucified, while Psalm 22 was read. There was then a short "watch" with Allegri's Miserere playing in the darkness as the congregation sat in silence. The photographs show the "Garden of Gethsmane" which was the only part of the church which was lit during the watch.
